A FinFET (fin field-effect transistor) is a MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) constructed on a silicon substrate in which the gate is positioned on several sides of the channel (fin) or wrapped around the channel to form a multigate structure. The source/drain region on the silicon surface is what gives FinFET its name; it looks like a fish’s back fin. For transistors to be shrunk down to the nanoscale zone, FinFET replaces the traditional MOSFET. Due to its numerous benefits, this kind of nonplanar or “3D” transistor is utilized in contemporary CPU architectures.
