Difference between SRAM & DRAM

The primary main difference between different memory types is the bit cell.

SRAM vs DRAM bit cells

The key distinction between DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) lies in their speed, cost, and structure. SRAM is known for its faster performance and higher cost compared to DRAM, which is slower but more affordable. SRAM is constructed using six transistors per memory cell, contributing to its faster speed. In contrast, DRAM utilizes only one transistor per memory cell, making it slower in comparison. However, the simplicity of DRAM’s structure results in lower power consumption and cost, making it a more economical choice despite its slower speed.

No. SRAM DRAM
1 No refresh required Needs periodic refresh
2 Simple read and faster access The complex read longer access time
3 Larger cells have a lower density, higher cost/bit Smaller cells have higher density, lower cost/bit
4 High power dissipation Low power dissipation
5 Speed is fast Speed is slow
6 Density is Low(16Trasistore/Bit) Density is High(1 Trasistore/Bit)
